Stay Safe from Holiday Driving Dangers
The holiday season is a great time to share traditions, attend festive parties, and plan fun family outings, However, it’s also one of the most dangerous times to drive, mainly because of the increase in alcohol- and drug-related accidents and driving fatalities. That’s one reason December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
Holiday driving dangers don’t stop with impaired drivers. During the holiday season, there are simply more people on the road, many of them tired, distracted, or otherwise not at their best. We at Lakewood Financial Services want you to stay safe on the road this holiday season, so here are some tips to help you avoid holiday driving dangers.
Danger: Driving while impaired. Alcohol and drugs—even some over-the-counter medications—don’t mix with driving.
Safety tips: Be aware of side effects of any medications you take, and avoid driving if you are not as alert as you should be. And, of course, if you know you’ll be drinking, plan so you won’t be behind the wheel. Designate a driver ahead of time, or plan to use a taxi or ride service when it’s time to hit the road.
Danger: Driving while fatigued or stressed. While joyful, the holiday season can also be a time of exhaustion, stress, and anxiety. On top of our normal lives, we’re shopping, wrapping gifts, attending holiday gatherings, and maybe working a few extra hours to prepare for holiday time off. Many people also plan a trip to visit family that involves long-distance driving.
Safety tips: If you’re stressed and tired, take a moment before you start your engine to take a deep breath and focus on what you’re about to do. Driving deserves your full attention. (Click here for tips on managing holiday stress.)
On long trips, take breaks, or have another driver take a turn. Try to avoid driving when you’d normally be sleeping. Make sure you’re well-rested before setting out on a long-distance drive.
Danger: Driving while distracted. Distractions might include animated conversations, eating or drinking while driving, looking at your cell phone, or not being able to see the road clearly because of an over-packed vehicle.
Safety tips: Do we need to say it again? Put your phone away!
Always make sure your view isn’t blocked by anything you’re transporting, like a Christmas tree, gifts, or luggage.
If you’re driving long distances with kids in the car, make sure they have things to do so they don’t get restless and distract you. (Click here for more tips to avoid distracted driving.)
Danger: Driving in unfamiliar areas or under unfamiliar conditions like snow or ice. This might include trips to see friends or family, or just a ride across town to look at Christmas lights.
Safety tips: If you’ll be travelling to a different climate, check the weather report before you go to see what the driving conditions will be. Also be sure your car is in good condition and able to handle those conditions. Make sure you have an emergency kit in case your vehicle breaks down or you’re in an accident.
Obey the speed limit and drive appropriately for road conditions.
